Sponsored by the State of Lower Austria
GIS Project

supported by EU/European Union, NÖ/State of Lower Austria and A/Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management

Initial situation

"Wilderness Dürrenstein" and its partners have collected a large amount of scientific data. At the same time the administration is confronted with an emphasis on PR within its field of functions. In February 2010, "Wilderness Dürrenstein" was a main exhibitor at a hunting fair in Wieselburg. Of course a professional presentation is important at public appearances. Maps and the scientific presentation of research data and – results are necessary, inevitable and contemporary. To guarantee efficiency in regard to the work of the administration, a geographic information system (GIS) will be set up for "Wilderness Dürrenstein". Time is convenient, because cooperation has been offered by the Institute of Forest Entomology, Forest Pathology and Forest Protection (BOKU, Vienna): http://www.wabo.boku.ac.at.

The project is carried out in line with the Programme for Rural Development.

Aims of the project:

  1. Establishing a geographic information system for an autonomous work of the administration and an improvement of PR
  2. Increased efficiency and professional appearance at public performances and presentations to introduce "Wilderness Dürrenstein"
  3. Improvement of educational work and PR

Measures

  1. Cooperation with the Institute of Forest Entomology, Forest Pathology and Forest Protection (BOKU, Vienna)
    • collection and processing of data
    • installation of a geographic data server (Arc SDE) for "Wilderness Dürrenstein"
    • incorporating geographic data into the server
    • installing internet map services (ArcIMS) to visualize geographic data
    • installation of a GIS-server with geographic data processing functions via internet (ArcGIS Server)
    • Updating geographic data
    • System maintenance, - backup and – updates
  2. Collecting and processing of existing and recent data
  3. Purchase of hardware
  4. Initial training
