Tasks of the administration of "Wilderness Dürrenstein", laid down in a contract with the State of Lower Austria, and what Federal Province of Lower Austria aims at, are varied. A summary of the main tasks and aims follows:
Establishing and preserving the first IUCN Category I region in Austria, implying that human intervention of any kind has to be reduced to a minimum. Interventions aiming at maintaining and/or improving ecologically sensitive areas have to be clearly limited both to a specific area and in time. There is also no unlimited right of access to "Wilderness Dürrenstein".
Permanent protection and conservation of existing natural communities and a widely undisturbed development of mountain forests. Accordingly, not a specific situation is to be preserved, but conditions that aid natural processes without human intervention.
Conservation and improvement of the state of preservation by implementing the management plan. The management plan mainly includes measures to manage the nature reserve and visitors.
Establishing an adequate monitoring system with scientific support.
Providing visitors with expert information in the course of guided tours. With few exceptions, visitors are only allowed to enter "Wilderness Dürrenstein" when participating in guided tours. These tours give an impression of the area's importance for nature and - conservation. The yearly programme offers excursions focusing on fauna and flora.
